— Rod Serling
About Rod Serling
Rod Serling was an American screenwriter, playwright, and television producer who created The Twilight Zone in 1959 and served as its host and primary writer for five seasons. A combat veteran of World War II who parachuted into the Philippines and witnessed significant combat, Serling used science fiction and fantasy as a way to say things about race, war, conformity, and power that the censors and sponsors of 1950s television would never have allowed him to say directly. He was, in the best sense, a smuggler — hiding urgent moral arguments inside entertainment.
Why This Quote
National Twilight Zone Day celebrates a television show, but Serling was never really in the television business. He was in the warning business. This quote, from the episode The Obsolete Man, captures the show's deepest preoccupation: that the most dangerous weapons are the ones we carry inside ourselves. Tyranny doesn't arrive only in uniform. It arrives in the small daily choices to look away, to go along, to decide that someone else is less than human. Serling said this in 1961. It has not aged a day.
